Back to School 2026-2027: Border Partners Gives Families a Helping Hand

Many volunteer hours supported us as we gathered school supplies for the coming year for students in Puerto Palomas.

Any parents (or grandparents!) reading this might know it is back-to-school season. That also means it is school supply shopping season. For many, school supplies are not just a matter of picking favorites amongst colorful notebooks. Often, those long lists of what kids need to make it through the school year are yet another expense for already-struggling families. That adds to their stress. That’s why Border Partners is taking care of the basics this back-to-school season in Palomas.

In late July, Border Partners began organizing bags of personalized school supplies for students. The supplies in the bags matched students’ ages and needs for the coming school year. All the bags contained notebooks, 10 pencils, an eraser, a sharpener, blue & black pens and more. Students in need will receive school supplies bags this August. We have 435 bags ready to distribute. This will ensure that no child has to go without.

More than that, we are supporting the school building needs directly. We delivered generously donated desks to the local secondary school. These desks will refresh school furniture and accommodate the high school students this year.

In addition, Border Partners is also busy planning its next bike workshop in partnership with the Bike Works. It’s planned for this September. We’re grateful that they gave us a large number of used bikes to fix up with kids in need. That also means not only are we providing kids with the supplies they need for a successful school year. We’re also providing the wheels to get students to school more quickly. And we all know how important a few extra minutes of sleep are to teens.

In our 15+ years working with schools and supporting students across Palomas, we have worked to improve and expand educational opportunities for local kids. We believe that everyone deserves to go into the school year with everything they need to succeed. This year, we have taken care of the basics, and the students will take care of the rest!
