Juan Velasco used the whiteboard to educate, particularly helping potential entrepreneurs and businessmen.
We established the Velasco Education Fund a year ago, to honor the memory and work of Juan Velasco in Puerto Palomas. In our first year, we awarded four students with funding to study at the university level. Soon, we will be awarding two more, four-year scholarships to students who plan to begin their university or trade school studies in the Fall of 2026.
As the four scholarship recipients of the Velasco Education Fund (VEF) approach the end of their first year of university study, they express heartfelt words of gratitude. When asked about some of their experiences during these two semesters, each responded with some beautiful comments and stories.
If you are interested in supporting this important effort, please donate to Border Partners, and specify that your donation is for the “Velasco Education Fund.” Thank you for your continued support of these scholars by contributing to the Velasco Education Fund!

Hello! I’m Andrea Enriquez, and I’m currently in my second semester of Psychology at the Autonomous University Ciudad Juarez’s Nuevo Casas Grandes campus. Being here is a wonderful experience, and learning about something you’re passionate about is truly beautiful. There are many things I enjoy—one of which is being part of the modern dance troupe—as well as the opportunity to study a subject I love, among other experiences. I would like to thank you for the support provided by the Juan Velasco scholarships.

It’s going very well, thank God. It hasn’t felt too burdensome because it’s something I like and enjoy. The support was a huge blessing, as it allowed me to pay for my accommodation when I first started out and cover the major expenses with your help—though riding the buses is honestly a real hassle, haha.
Part Two in this series will feature the other two Velasco Scholarship Fund awardees.
